Google’s Chrome: More power to the masses

September 3rd, 2008, 10:33 am by Hana

Appeal-Democrat ran an article on it in Wednesday’s paper today, on page C6. If you have Windows Vista or XP, you can download the Google Chrome browser. The Macintosh and Linux version will be rolling out shortly. We just tested it on our Windows Vista computers and it’s blazing fast, much faster than the other browsers out there. The comic explaining Chrome here, explains how it is improved in terms to security, speed, protection against malware and phishing, and why it is free.

In a nutshell: Chrome’s structure changed to a “sandbox” format which is a departure from the old school of thought in which functions should be interlinked into a thread. In this thread function, one function begins then completes its function and passes on to the next one. However, if one function gets stuck and loops on itself (like javascript which is practically everywhere), it can prevent the browser from going on and you see it constantly loading.  This sandbox format helps load pages quickly by skipping parts that stall. The sandbox format also protects you from phishing and malware by preventing access to the other functions on your browser and computer, keeping it all inside Chrome. All you have to do is close the tab of that web page and it is gone forever without having ever touched your hard drive or your e-mails.

Go on, try it out.

OMG! I Didn’t Mean to Click on THAT!

Mozilla FirefoxEver click on a link that you thought was Work Safe, only to find it’s So Very Not Work Safe? Your face turned red and you hoped none of your co-workers saw your screen.

Happened to me too — one time too many. Here’s a FireFox Plugin that will tell you if the link you’re thinking about clicking on, is Safe For Work (SFW) or Not Safe For Work (NSFW): Worksafer! Get it here.

What it does is it gives you a rating information from the bottom-right corner of your browser when you hover over a text link. The information comes from a database of user-submitted rating on web sites.
